On February 2, 2026, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced that the 10th Asian Winter Games, originally scheduled to be held in 2029 at the Trojena ski resort in the city of NEOM, Saudi Arabia, had been postponed indefinitely and were subsequently awarded to Almaty, Kazakhstan. Almaty, together with Astana, previously hosted the 2011 Asian Winter Games and successfully held the 2017 Winter Universiade, giving the city extensive experience in organizing major international winter sporting events.
The 2029 Asian Winter Games are expected to be held using existing sports infrastructure. This means that the organization of the competitions will not require the construction of major new facilities. The existing sports complexes are capable of hosting competitions in all sports included in the Asian Winter Games programme, making preparations more rational and economically efficient.
On February 5, 2026, in Milan, Italy, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan officially signed the host-city contract.
