Music and Sport

Music is not merely a combination of beautiful sounds; it is a powerful force capable of reaching the human soul, touching our feelings and influencing our inner world. It is impossible to imagine Turkmen weddings without songs and music, as they are an integral part of our celebrations and festivities. When we think of music at such occasions, one of the first things that comes to mind is the dutar, a source of pride for the Turkmen people. The melodious sounds of its strings fill hearts with joy and inspiration.

Music has a profoundly beneficial effect on human health. It helps people relax, calms the mind and has a positive influence on the nervous system. Its enchanting melodies appeal not only to people but also to animals. This can be clearly observed in our magnificent Akhal-Teke horses, which are sensitive to music. We can see this when these splendid horses respond to lively melodies, moving gracefully and in harmony with the rhythm.

However, the benefits of music do not end there. It also plays an important role in sport. At first glance, music and sport may seem to belong to entirely different worlds, yet they are closely interconnected. When properly selected, music listened to during training sessions and competitions can help improve an athlete’s performance. Moreover, it plays a significant role in athletes’ physical and psychological preparation.

Before competitions, intense nervousness can cause an increase in the level of adrenaline in an athlete’s blood. Listening to music is one way to cope with this state. We often see our athletes putting on their headphones and immersing themselves in their favourite melodies before an event. There is a good reason for this. Listening to music through headphones helps athletes block out surrounding noise and the loud cheers of spectators, allowing them to focus entirely on the upcoming competition. Athletes who are mentally prepared feel more confident and are better equipped to pursue victory.

How, then, should music be used during training and competitions?

Music during training is not just a source of entertainment. Rhythmic melodies can increase an athlete’s activity levels, while energetic music helps them pay less attention to fatigue. Listening to music may also contribute to greater endurance. Scientific studies have shown that music can divert attention from feelings of fatigue and reduce the perceived intensity of pain and physical exertion.

In sports such as wrestling, judo and other disciplines that require considerable physical strength and quick reactions, energetic music can provide athletes with an additional boost of energy and help increase the speed of their movements. During training sessions in futsal, basketball, volleyball and other team sports, music can create a positive atmosphere and strengthen team spirit.

There are also sports in which music is not merely a means of psychological preparation but one of the central elements of the performance itself. Dance sport, rhythmic gymnastics and figure skating are striking examples. In these disciplines, music and sport become inseparable. The rhythm, tempo and character of a melody shape the athletes’ movements and help them convey the mood of the musical composition.

For example, energetic music calls for fast, dynamic and lively movements, whereas lyrical melodies require fluidity, expressiveness and emotional depth. In these sports, every movement must be in harmony with the music. When evaluating performances, judges consider not only the complexity and quality of the technical elements but also the athletes’ ability to feel the music, express its character through movement and convey its artistic image to the audience.

In conclusion, music and sport are two powerful forces that are closely connected. If sport strengthens the body, music uplifts the spirit and inspires us with renewed energy. When an athlete’s physical preparation is combined with the power and rhythm of music, a special strength emerges — one that helps overcome challenges and strive for new victories.
