Kang Yujeong from Korea went to extreme measures to meet the weight requirements of the Olympic judo tournament.
The 25-year-old athlete, who performs in the 48 kg weight category, did not eat all day before the official weigh-in for an Olympic bout, but her weight was 48,850 kg with an allowable overweight of 500 grams. She tried to lose weight by jogging, but her body was so dehydrated that an hour before the official weigh-in, Kang lost another 100 grams. The judoka continued to run and fainted from overstrain.
After she has received medical assistance, it became clear that it would not be possible to lose any more weight. Then Kang decided to take a radical measure and shaved her hair bald. Her weight was 48.5 kg during the official weigh-in.
The attempts to lose weight affected the Korean athlete’s condition, and she lost in the 1/16 final match against Marusa Stangar from Slovenia.
