TURKMEN ATHLETES TO PERFORM AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES

The names of the Turkmen athletes who will perform at the XXXII Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan have been announced. According to the National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan, 9 athletes will represent our country at the prestigious tournament. Thus, our skilful athlete Gulbadam Babamuratova will compete in the judo event. At her second Olympics (the first one was the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro), Gulbadam will compete in the 52-kilogramme weight class event.

Hojamuhammet Toychyyev (+109 kg), Ovez Ovezov (109 kg), Rejepbay Rejepov (81 kg), Polina Guryeva (59 kg) and Kristina Shermetova (55 kg) will demonstrate their skills in the weightlifting events. Mergen Mammedov will compete in track and field athletics, namely, hammer throwing event. Darya Semyonova (100-metre breaststroke) and Merdan Atayev (100 and 200-metre backstroke) will perform at the swimming events.

According to the tradition, the opening ceremony will be followed by judo competitions. The fights will take place in the Nippon Budokan Sports Complex in central Tokyo on July 24–31. 386 wrestlers will compete for 15 medal sets (seven each for both men and women and a new mixed team event). A team event between the men and women teams will be held for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games.

Weightlifters will compete for 14 medal sets (seven each for both men and women) in the events, which will be held on July 24 – August 4. Our compatriots will prepare under the leadership of honoured coaches of Turkmenistan Ikram Matkarimov, Arthur Emiryan and an international master of sports, Umurbek Bazarbayev, who has performed at the Olympics four times.

Hajimyrat Rahmanov, an international master of sports, will coach our athlete M.Mammedov. The hammer throwing events are scheduled on August 3–5.

Sergey Yepifanov, an honoured coach of Turkmenistan, coach of the men's and women's national team, will prepare our national team for the swimming events, which will be held on July 24 – August 2.

At the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, athletes will compete for 339 medals in 33 sport events.
