Turkmen tennis players are performing well at the Davis Cup Zonal Tournament, held in Isa Town, Bahrain, as part of Group V of the Asia/Oceania Zone. Fourteen teams are vying for promotion.
According to the publication Golden Age, in the second round of the group stage, Turkmenistan won a convincing 3-0 victory over Bangladesh, repeating their first-round result against Brunei.
This victory was especially significant because, from 2005 to 2011, Bangladesh had dominated their head-to-head matches. During that period, they won five times: in 2005, 2007, and 2008 by 2:1, and in 2009 and 2011 with identical scores of 3:0. After that, the dynamics of their on-court rivalry changed dramatically. In 2013 in Dubai, the Turkmen players left the Bangladeshi team without a single chance, crushing them 3:0, and in 2018 in Oman they won the three-match encounter 2:1.
Despite the convincing 3:0 result, the match was extremely tense and lasted over six hours. The singles matches were particularly close, with both matches ending in three sets. Selim Chagylov scored the first point, defeating Zarif Abrar 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The second match between Allanur Dayanjov and Zubin Omar was the longest of the day, lasting 2 hours and 57 minutes. Dayanjov snatched a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory, winning the deciding tiebreak. In the doubles match, Meylis Orazmuhammedov and Yuri Rogusskiy easily defeated Zarif Abrar and Tanvir Pasha 6-1, 6-2.
Thus, Turkmenistan continues its winning streak. In the final round of Group C, the Turkmen tennis players will face hosts Bahrain in a battle for first place.
The group winners advance to the playoffs, with the top two earning promotion to Group IV of the Asia/Oceania Zone next year.
Turkmenistan has been participating in the Davis Cup, known as the 'World Cup of Tennis', since 2004 and achieved its best result in 2015, reaching the Group III playoffs.
