The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, observed annually on 6 April, provides an opportunity to recognize the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and in people’s lives across the globe.
Sport is a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and promote sustainable development and peace, as well as solidarity and respect for all.
The global theme of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2024 is “Sport for the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies”.
To mark the Day, the UN Headquarters in New York will host an event highlighting how major sporting organisations are forming partnerships to have a positive impact on the people and environments in which they operate. The event will bring together representatives of the international sporting community, including members of the UN Football for Goals Initiative, to share their best practices, discuss challenges and explore opportunities for collaboration to bring about social change and contribute to global efforts for sustainable development and peace.
The United Nations has long recognized the power and universality of sport, using it to unite individuals and groups. To this end, events are conducted from the global to the grassroots level, and sports-related campaigns and initiatives are developed.
