On August 8, 2021, the closing ceremony of the XXXII Summer Olympic Games took place in the capital of Japan.
The 2020 Olympic Games ran from July 23, 2021. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games saw medals awarded in 339 events across 33 sports. The Turkmenistan national team consisting of 9 athletes competed in 4 sports (weightlifting, swimming, judo and athletics) at the 2020 Olympic Games.
A referee from Turkmenistan Charygeldi Mammedov judged the weightlifting competitions. This is the first time in the history of the Summer Olympic Games when a representative from Turkmenistan was a weightlifting referee.
For the first time in history, the Turkmenistan national team won a medal at the Summer Olympic Games. A student from Turkmen State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport Polina Guryeva (59 kg) won a silver medal in the weightlifting tournament.
The US team (39 gold, 41 silver, 33 bronze) leads the medal count at the XXXII Summer Olympic Games, the China team ranks second (38, 32, 18) and Japan ranks third (27, 14, 17).
The next Summer Olympic Games will take place in Paris in 2024.
