Olympic Torch Relay kicks off without spectators for the first time in history

The Olympic Torch Relay is being held without spectators for the first time in history. The local authorities in the western prefecture of Osaka have used this format due to the threat of a rapid rise in coronavirus infections, the Tokyo 2021 Organising Committee reports.

The organisers allowed up to four family members or friends of each runner to see the relay. Famous Japanese artists and athletes living in Osaka will carry the Olympic torch.

The Olympic torch relay began in Japan on March 25 and will last for 121 days.

The Tokyo Olympic Games will take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
