The women’s 3×3 basketball team of Turkmenistan will take part in the qualification tournament for the 2020 Olympics to be held in the Indian city of Bangalore on March 18-22. In 2017 and 2019, the city also hosted the Asian Women’s Basketball Cup.
– We are pleased to welcome teams from 36 countries in Bangalore, the city where basketball competitions have been held more than once, Govindaraj Kempareddi, President of the Indian Basketball Federation said.
The tournament, organized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), will bring together 40 national teams (20 women’s and 20 men’s teams). A team from Turkmenistan will perform in Group B, where basketball players of Japan, Iran, Australia and Ukraine will compete with them.
Only six teams will continue to compete for qualifications for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The last two tours to the 2020 Olympics will be challenged in Budapest on April 24-26 this year, and the 16 best teams will compete in summer at the games in Japan.
One of the goals of 3×3 basketball is to popularize this team game, and therefore the FIBA has introduced a number of new rules: a maximum of 10 teams from each continent and a minimum of 30 different countries must take part in the Olympic qualification tournament.
